Made By History

Kathryn Cramer Brownell joins Nicole Hemmer and Brian Rosenwald as co-editor for Made By History, a new political history online publication at the Washington Post. At a time when everything seems uncertain and unprecedented, we need historians to enter the fray and show how understanding the past can help us better navigate the present. Every day, we publish new writing by historians exploring the history behind the headlines, bringing an important new perspective to the news of the day.

We accept outside contributions, so EMAIL US us your ideas for news-relevant, argument-driven pieces (generally in the 600-1000 word range). Pieces are reviewed by trained historians to make sure we’re not just making history, but making good history.

Made By History pieces are terrific for the classroom, as well. Kathryn Cramer Brownell has compiled and categorized the publications for the American History survey course. You can view those resources HERE.

“Instead of making history, we are made by history.”
